How to Choose Your First Sailing License

Getting a sailing license can be compared to obtaining a driver’s license. Similar to a driver’s license, a sailing license is not issued by the school where you learn to sail but by a legal authority. Each sailing school is affiliated with one of the governing authorities that issue sailing licenses. Therefore, a sailing license is usually first obtained in your local area to fit your local requirements. Later, this license can either be recognized in another country or converted into an International Certificate of Competence if required where you plan to sail. Alternatively, in some cases, you can first obtain the desired type of license, then convert it to an international certificate of competence, and subsequently to your local sailing license.

Understand the Types of Sailing License

The world-famous types of sailing license are: Royal Yachting Association (RYA); International Yacht Training (IYT); American Sailing Association (ASA); International Sailing Schools Association (ISSA); International Certificate of Competence (ICC); and some more, such as the US Sailing (USS). When choosing a sailing school, note which sailing license you're about to obtain. For example, an IYT and RYA license can be converted to an ICC, while ISSA does not even require an ICC, and ASA and USS can issue their own International Proficiency Certificate (IPC) if required for sailing in another countries.

How to Get an International Sailing License

The role of the authority is to govern educational standards, including the learning curriculum, the quality of boats and classes, and instructor skills. Some sailing schools may provide training in your native language, while others may not. To address the differences in training programs, ‘Resolution 40’ was developed, allowing you to obtain an International Certificate of Competency (ICC) based on your local sailing license as a common standard for validating your knowledge and skills. Even though some local sailing licenses can be accepted in another country, it is still required to get a Very-High-Frequency (VHF) radio operator license from one of the major sailing authorities for international acceptance.

Completing a certified course from a recognized authority will ensure you gain the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to obtain your sailing license. Upon successfully passing the examination, you will receive a sailing license from the governing body. If you plan to sail in foreign countries, you may need to convert this sailing license into an ICC, although you don't need an international certificate for sailing in your own country. Be sure to find out the specific requirements of the country where you plan to sail, as regulations can vary. Completing this process will equip you with the credentials needed to sail internationally.
